European Championship round of 16 against Denmark temporarily interrupted due to thunderstorm

Multiple fan zones were closed on Saturday due to a low pressure system bringing heavy rain and hail. Central fan zones in cities such as Düsseldorf, Berlin, Cologne, Dortmund and Leipzig had already been closed about two weeks ago due to similar weather conditions.

Germany has been hit by various severe weather systems over the past few weeks. In the night to Friday, heavy rain showers and thunderstorms caused flooded streets and basement flooding in several federal states. Traffic was also significantly affected in some places.

Despite the challenging weather conditions, Denmark managed to advance to the European Championship round of sixteen. The rain and potential threat of a thunderstorm did not deter their men's national soccer team. Unfortunately, their round of 16 match in Dortmund was not without incident, as Michael Oliver, the English referee, had to suspend play momentarily due to lightning in the area. Fortunately, the game resumed after a short delay. Meanwhile, back in Germany, more rain showers were expected throughout the day, bringing further disruption to some fan zones. However, despite the weather, the European Championship continued to captivate fans across Europe.
