Shoulder injury - European Championship hopes for Kristjansson: comeback after six months
Iceland's playmaker Gisli Kristjansson made his comeback to professional handball on Wednesday evening. The 24-year-old was substituted in the 13th minute of his SC Magdeburg's cup game. In the semi-final of the Champions League in June, Kristjansson had suffered a serious shoulder injury, but had nevertheless played a decisive role in Magdeburg's second title win since 2002 while taking painkillers.
Kristjansson's comeback means that he can still hope to play for his home country at the European Championships in Germany in January. Like his club colleagues Omar Ingi Magnusson and Janus Dadi Smarason, the playmaker was included in the provisional 35-man squad nominated by Iceland's national coach Snorri Steinn Guðjónsson on December 1.
