Police in Berlin - European Championship and Ukraine gathering: extensive implementation
Caused by the upcoming Football European Championship and Ukraine Conference, the Berlin Police are gearing up for one of the biggest operations in recent times. Police President Barbara Slowik remarked, "During my six years in office, the situation has never been as strained as it is now." Police forces are required to be prepared for various incidents, such as terror attacks, unruly fans, and protests from Palestine supporters or climate activists.
During the final game in Berlin on July 14th, it is estimated that around 3,000 to 4,000 police officers will be on standby. The number could increase depending on the team matchups, as Stephan Katte, the lead operator, indicated. Similarly, on days with German games or in Berlin, approximately 2,000 police officers will be necessary. "We must consistently reassess the security situation."
Additionally, police operations must contend with unsettled global crises and conflicts in regions like Gaza and Ukraine. Katte underlined, "The European Championship offers a potential target for an assault."
