Europe Cup: Seawolves miss out on second round

Four wins were not enough. The Bundesliga basketball team was unlucky to be eliminated from the European Cup after the first group stage. This was due to a change in the scoring.

Europe Cup: Seawolves miss out on second round

The Rostock Seawolves' journey through Europe this season is over. Although the Bundesliga basketball team won its final game against Jonava CBet last Tuesday and thus recorded four wins and second place in its group, it was not enough to progress in the Fiba Europe Cup. The Seawolves finished seventh in the table of the second-placed clubs in the ten groups and only missed out on the next round due to their poorer basket difference compared to FC Porto (-3/+5).

The decisive factor was the change in classification after the three Israeli clubs withdrew from the competition. As a result, the results of the fourth-placed team in each of the other seven groups were eliminated after the conclusion of all matches. In Rostock's case, this affected the games against bottom-placed Karhu (Finland). "As a result, we are missing the two wins against Karhu Baskets and the many positive points. Otherwise, we would definitely be among the best runners-up," said Head Coach Christian Held on Thursday.

"Nevertheless, it was a valuable experience," continued the 35-year-old. "I think you could also see a development, because we won all three second-round games. In that respect, I think we can take a lot from it and it was an important step."

Since the Seawolves were also eliminated from the cup competition, they can now concentrate fully on the Bundesliga. After seven games, the Mecklenburg club has just two wins and is in 13th place. Their next opponent is BG Göttingen on Saturday (8 p.m.). Bitter irony: The visitors are currently second last in the BBL table, but have qualified for the second group stage of the Europe Cup.

The Rostock Seawolves, despite winning their final game and finishing second in their group of the Fiba Europe Cup, failed to advance due to a negative basket difference compared to FC Porto. In the second-placed teams' table, the Seawolves ended up in seventh position, missing out on the next round due to the withdrawal of three Israeli clubs and the subsequent elimination of results against Karhu Baskets.
