Group game - Europe Cup: BG Göttingen celebrates important success
BG Göttingen has put itself in a good starting position in the battle for a place in the quarter-finals of the Fiba Europe Cup. On Wednesday evening, the team of Head Coach Olivier Foucart celebrated its first success in the second game of the second group stage with a 76:70 (42:31) win against Balkan Botevgrad (Bulgaria). A week ago, the German Basketball League side had lost unluckily 73:75 at current leaders Surne Bilbao Basket. The first and second teams from each of the four groups advance to the next round. BG's best scorer was Umoja Gibson (18 points).
Göttingen got off to the better start in the game and was already twelve points ahead in the first quarter. However, the club from Lower Saxony had problems finishing its attacks successfully in the second period. The visitors capitalized on the weak spell and fought their way back to 24:25. Göttingen then got back to its game and pulled away again by the break.
After the break, the German club kept its opponents at bay for a long time, but the lead was gone with just over five minutes remaining. However, Gibson finally paved the way to victory for Göttingen in the final spell with two free throws to make it 76:70.
