Eurofighter arrives at Hanover Airport for exercise
The German Air Force is training at Hanover Airport for several days to protect large cities. According to the Bundeswehr, the first Eurofighter is due to land at the airport on Monday afternoon (2.30 p.m.).
In the "Hannover Shield" exercise scenario, the three unarmed fighter jets are tasked with protecting a major city like Hannover from potential airborne threats such as drones or low-flying cruise missiles.
The aircraft could detect and counter airborne threats at an early stage and supplement ground-based air defense missile systems. The core exercise days are reportedly planned for Tuesday and Wednesday. Airport Managing Director Martin Roll said that regular air traffic would not be affected by the exercise.
During the exercise, civil protection authorities may need to coordinate with the military to ensure the safety of the city. The German military's involvement in civil protection can extend to providing additional air defense capabilities.
