Eurocity collides with downed tree - weather operations

A storm caused a tree to fall onto tracks near Lake Chiemsee. A train collided with it. The track was clear again after hours. Other parts of Bavaria experienced further storm incidents.

In parts of Bavaria, firefighting and police forces were deployed, especially late on Tuesday evening, due to local severe weather events. Particularly in Lower Bavaria, the Palatinate, and western Munich, forces were dispatched due to adverse weather conditions, as reported by police and firefighters on Wednesday morning.

Temporary disruptions in rail traffic in the Landkreis Rosenheim

In the Upper Bavarian Landkreis Rosenheim, there was also a significant weather-related incident: A Eurocity train collided with a tree that had fallen onto the tracks and came to a halt. According to the Federal Police, there were approximately 260 people on board. No injuries were reported. The track was reopened around 1:30 AM, and train traffic resumed.

The section between Bad Endorf and Prien near Lake Chiemsee was impassable since Tuesday evening, around 7:00 PM. The overhead line was damaged and had to be repaired. The train was reportedly towed by a diesel locomotive. According to a railway spokesperson, the firefighters helped passengers disembark. Passengers were transported to Prien by minibuses.

Elsewhere, there were also disruptions in rail traffic due to severe weather on Tuesday evening, the spokesperson said. Vegetation fell onto the tracks, particularly in North Rhine-Westphalia and Bavaria.

Uprooted trees, fallen branches, flooded cellars

In the Niederbayern deployment area, forces were dispatched to 24 weather-related incidents between 8:00 PM and 11:00 PM. Police reported that trees were mostly uprooted, causing traffic disruptions that had to be cleared. Vehicles were also damaged by falling branches, and cellars flooded. In Feldkirchen, in the Straubing-Bogen district, there was a temporary power outage.

Even events in Niederbayern were affected: The Lampion parade planned in connection with the Gauboden folk festival was canceled by the organizer due to the threat of severe weather on Tuesday evening. The event area was quickly and orderly evacuated.

In the Oberpfalz, there were also weather-related incidents. According to a police spokesperson, forces were dispatched 16 times - mainly in the Regensburg district and city, and the Schwandorf district. In Munich, severe weather moved over the western part of the city in the evening. The fire department reported 35 weather-related incidents. Heavy rain flooded roads, flooded underpasses, and flooded cellars.

Three injured in weather-related accident on A9

In the Upper Bavarian Landkreis Eichstätt, there was an accident on the A9 due to heavy rain, with three injuries. Initial findings suggest that a driver lost control of their vehicle near Denkendorf, heading towards Munich, due to weather conditions. The vehicle reportedly collided with the central reservation and another car. Both vehicles then left the road and overturned.

The driver of the second car suffered minor injuries, while the other driver and a passenger in their vehicle were reportedly moderately injured.

In the rest of Bavaria, police reported few to no weather-related incidents. It remained calm, according to the Bavarian Police Headquarters in Swabia North.

In Steinmühle, in the Landkreis Ansbach of Middle Franconia, a severe hailstorm occurred, according to information from Bayerischer Rundfunk. The station showed footage of a resident clearing their driveway with a snow shovel, saying, "I've never seen anything like this." The hailstorm lasted 15 to 20 minutes.

More thunderstorms and heavy rain are expected in southern Bavaria: The German Weather Service predicts that the Free State will experience scattered thunderstorms initially, becoming more frequent in the afternoon, with heavy rain, hail, and gusts of wind.

Locally, heavy rain of up to 40 liters per square meter and gusts of up to 100 kilometers per hour are possible, with the greatest risk in Swabia and Upper Bavaria.

The Eurocity train, which collided with a fallen tree on the tracks in the Landkreis Rosenheim, required the assistance of firefighters to help disembark passengers safely.

During the weather-related incidents in Niederbayern, several vehicles were damaged by falling branches, necessitating the involvement of both police and firefighters for clearance and assistance.
