EU meets Western Balkans countries for summit in Brussels
At the last summit in Albania in October, the EU promised the Western Balkan countries six billion euros in return for reforms. The Brussels summit is intended to reaffirm the countries' accession prospects. Austria and Eastern European EU countries such as Hungary are calling for the Western Balkan states not to forget Ukraine. Vienna recently even made the start of accession negotiations with Bosnia-Herzegovina a condition for the planned start of accession talks with Ukraine.

At the upcoming Brussels summit, Montenegro and North Macedonia are eagerly anticipating potential progress towards EU membership. The last Sunday saw Aleksandar Vucic, Serbia's president, meet with Kosovo's leaders to discuss ongoing tensions. In line with the agreement at the last summit in Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina is expected to implement necessary reforms in exchange for potential EU funding. Some EU countries, including Austria and Eastern European ones like Hungary, have urged the Western Balkan states not to neglect Ukraine's accession prospects. Vienna recently linked Bosnia-Herzegovina's EU accession negotiations commencement to Ukraine's own negotiations. The Brussels summit aims to reassure the Western Balkan countries of their EU accession prospects, as promised at the previous Albania gathering.
