EU Election Sees Traffic Light Parties Enduring Defeats, CDU/CSU and AfD Achieve Victories
Based on predictions from ARD and ZDF, the Union emerged victorious with 29.5-30% of the votes (EU election 2019: 28.9%). The AfD slipped to 16-16.5%, drastically less than what they had scored in recent surveys (2019: 11%).
The SPD, led by Chancellor Olaf Scholz, improved its disappointing performance from the EU election 2019 and finished with 14% in the projections (2019: 15.8%). The Greens faced the most significant losses among all parties and secured 12-12.5% of the votes (2019: 20.5%). The FDP incurred minor losses and obtained 5% (2019: 5.4%).
The former Left Party member Sahra Wagenknecht's new party, BSW, registered a strong start, garnering 5.5-6% of the votes from scratch - eclipsing the Left Party, which managed merely 3%, tied with the pro-European small party Volt.
Both the Free Voters and the fragmented groups The Party, the Animal Welfare Party, the Family Party, and the ODP may expect representation in the European Parliament, according to ZDF forecasts, since there is no threshold for the election.
