EU countries require submission of asylum plan roadmaps prior to the holiday season.
The Common European Asylum System (CEAS) in the EU was finalized in Brussels during mid-May. Member states now have two years to incorporate it into their domestic laws. Vice-President Margaritis Schinas described this as an arduous task due to the intricate legal framework.
Federal Interior Minister Nancy Faeser mentioned a speedy implementation of the EU Asylum Pact, which aims to tighten procedures significantly. Individuals with low chances of obtaining asylum should be removed from border camps.
EU Home Affairs Commissioner Ylva Johansson highlighted the recent rise in return rates, stating that 25% of illegal migrants have been expelled from the EU since the start of the year, compared to 19% in the whole of 2023.
Approximately 15 EU countries, mostly Austria and the Netherlands, are pushing for more stringent asylum regulations. Some of their proposals include simplified deportations to supposedly safe third countries. Given the success of right-wing populists in several European elections, these calls for stricter rules are bound to grow louder.
