Commercial Exchange - EU Commission Advocates Tougher Regulations for Online Platform Temu

Temu, a popular Chinese online marketplace, will face stricter regulations in the European Union. With over 45 million monthly users from the EU, the platform is considered a "very large online platform" by the EU Commission. Under the new EU law on digital services (DSA), such platforms are required to be more vigilant in detecting and removing illegal products.

To achieve this, Temu may need to modify its user interface to make it easier for users to report suspicious products. As prescribed by the law, large digital platforms are responsible for implementing stricter measures than smaller ones. The aim is to speed up the process of removing illegal content from these platforms.

The EU Commission has given Temu four months to meet these requirements and submit a report of their compliance. This will entail Temu taking risk assessments, such as those related to the handling of illicit content, which will then be reviewed by the Commission.

Steps to take:

  1. Monitor for potentially harmful products
  2. Adjust user interface for easier reporting
  3. Implement faster content removal processes
  4. Regularly submit reports to the EU Commission
