ETH Zurich plans branch office in Heilbronn

ETH Zurich is planning a branch in Germany. With funding from the Dieter Schwarz Foundation, around 20 new professorships are to be created in Zurich and on the Heilbronn educational campus over the next 30 years, as ETH President Joel Mesot announced on Friday. A letter of intent to this effect has been signed between the two sides. The entrepreneur behind the foundation is Dieter Schwarz. The Schwarz Group owns Lidl and Kaufland, among others. Schwarz's empire is one of the largest retail groups in the world.

Noel said that the partnership with the foundation would allow ETH Zurich to further develop its research and teaching, particularly in the field of artificial intelligence, to an extent that would not be possible within the framework of regular ETH funding and structures.

The amount of the Foundation's financial commitment was not disclosed in a press release. The majority of the new professorships are to be located in Heilbronn in the future. The Managing Director of the Dieter Schwarz Foundation, Reinhold Geilsdörfer, explained: "We are delighted that, after the renowned Technical University of Munich, another top university, ETH Zurich, will now strengthen the ecosystem in Heilbronn." 7600 students from various institutions and disciplines study and research on the campus.

An educational campus, a programming school, several institutes: supported by the foundation, more and more educational institutions are springing up in Heilbronn near the headquarters of Lid and Kaufland in Neckarsulm. A research park for artificial intelligence (AI) is soon to be added. A kind of circular AI district for 5,000 employees is to be built on an area of 23 hectares. It should be completed in ten years at the latest.

Baden-Württemberg's Science Minister Petra Olschowski (Greens) said that the plans are proof of Baden-Württemberg's enormous attractiveness as a top AI location. The research park for AI in Heilbronn sets standards through strong cooperation.
