Award - Estonian head of government receives Marion Dönhoff Prize

Estonian Prime Minister Kaja Kallas will be honored with the Marion Dönhoff Prize for International Understanding and Reconciliation on Sunday (11:00 a.m.). According to the "Zeit" publishing group, the 46-year-old will receive the prize for her contribution to building a strong and democratic Europe. In view of the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine, Kallas is an exemplary advocate for the defense of European freedoms and values.

The laudatory speech at the ceremony in the Deutsches Schauspielhaus will be given by the former Polish ambassador to Germany, Janusz Reiter.

The human rights organization Hawar.help e.V., which campaigns for women's rights in Iran, will also receive a prize of 20,000 euros. The association was founded in response to the genocide committed by the Islamic State against the Yazidis. Journalist Natalie Amiri is expected to give the laudatory speech.

The weekly newspaper "Die Zeit", the "Zeit" Foundation Ebelin and Gerd Bucerius and the Marion Dönhoff Foundation are awarding the prize for the 21st time this year. They are named after the former "Die Zeit" editor Marion Gräfin Dönhoff, who was born in Königsberg in 1909 and died in Hamburg in 2002.
