Political gatherings - Essen's mayor calls for requirements to determine building allocations at AfD party conference.

The AfD party's planned convention for June 29th and 30th was scheduled to happen at Essen Grugahalle, like other parties have done before. The city, however, has ended their contract with the AfD, which had been set in early 2023. The AfD is not happy about the termination and is protesting it. The outcome is still uncertain.

During a press conference, Kufen and representatives from the city, churches, unions, and initiatives shared details about an alternative program to the party convention. The main event with speeches, music, and information stands will be held on a trade fair site near the Grugahalle, but without any direct contact. Kufen stressed that they're against any violence and support democracy and stand against hate and slander. Florian Mamat from the "Aufstehen gegen Rassismus" alliance mentioned that thousands of participants are expected, and even the mayor will deliver a greeting.

The AfD party conference, originally scheduled in Essen Grugahalle, was moved due to the city's decision to terminate their contract with the party in early 2023. Despite this, the CDU, as a part of Germany's political parties, held their Federal Party Conference in North Rhine-Westphalia around the same time, attracting a large number of participants. The AfD's reaction to their convention's cancellation remains unsettled.
