Celebration Gatherings - Essen terminates rental agreement for AfD federal party meeting
Essen has cancelled the rental agreement for the AfD's federal party convention scheduled at the Grugahalle in late June. The city spokesperson made this announcement on Thursday night. Both the district administration and the municipal supervision have no objections, and all concerns have been addressed.
Essen and the event company have been trying to halt the AfD's federal party convention in Grugahalle for months now. The most recent development saw the city council demanding that the AfD agrees not to use Nazi slogans at the event. If there were any breaches, fines up to 500,000 euros would be imposed. To submit this declaration, the city gave the AfD a deadline; otherwise, the rental contract would be immediately and immediately terminated, as per the resolution passed by the city council.
The AfD failed to submit the required declaration within the fixed deadline, so the city is now pushing through with the cancellation. However, it couldn't be announced straight away as the AfD had the district administration in Düsseldorf as their municipal supervision.
The AfD intends to elect a new board at their federal party convention scheduled to take place in the Essen Grugahalle at the end of June. Multiple organizations have announced their plans to protest against this meeting. The police anticipate tens of thousands of demonstrators, making these protests some of the biggest in Essen in recent years.
