Essen exhibition with empty space after curator disinvitation
Following the disinvitation of curator Anaïs Duplan, the Museum Folkwang opened its exhibition "We is the future. Visions of New Communities" without the artworks Duplan had planned. Duplan had prepared contributions for the exhibition on so-called Afro-Futurism - a cultural movement with visions of the future from a black perspective.
However, the museum ended its collaboration with Duplan last week because he had used Instagram to call for support for the BDS network, which is classified as anti-Semitic and boycotts Israel.
A large table with information material on the topic of Afro-futurism was set up in the exhibition area originally intended for Duplan's contributions. The table is also intended to provide space for discussion.
Until March 17 next year, the exhibition will show around 160 works from 120 years of artistic reflection on ideal forms of coexistence. On display are paintings, sculptures, videos and performances as well as an installation created especially for the exhibition.
Despite the conflicts surrounding Anaïs Duplan's disinvitation, the 'Art' of 'Exhibitions' at Museum Folkwang continues, featuring a large table on 'Afro-futurism' as an alternative to Duplan's planned contributions. The table aims to foster 'Exhibitions' that encourage open dialogue and discussion.
