Soccer - Erzgebirge Aue win historic catch-up match
Third-tier German football club Erzgebirge Aue won the "international make-up game in the UEFA Champions League" of 1960. Sixty-four years after the originally scheduled date, which fell due to political reasons, the Violets in the Lössnitz Valley were able to decide the unofficial rematch against the Northern Irish Glenavon FC with a score of 5:0 (3:0).
Before the Champions League anthem and a group photo, the Violets went into the lead in front of 4842 spectators as early as after a quarter of an hour. Marcel Bär (15.) and Marvin Stefaniak from the penalty spot (17.) secured an early 2:0. In the 33rd minute, newcomer Mika Clausen scored the 3:0.
After the break, Boris Tashchy (47.) scored the 4:0, and William Kallenbach (86.) scored shortly before the end for the 5:0. The Northern Irish also had chances, but were clearly outmatched by the Violets. The return match will be held in a year in Northern Ireland. The next test game for Aue takes place on July 9 at the training camp in Bad Blankenburg against Regionalligist ZFC Meuselwitz.
In recognition of their victorious performance, FC Erzgebirge Aue is now eagerly looking forward to participating in the European Cup. Despite the Soccer team's impressive display in the Champions League, a catch-up match against Saxony's ZFC Meuselwitz serves as their next challenge. Remarkably, Ireland will host a return match against the Violets for the unofficial Champions League rematch against Glenavon FC. Regrettably, the Northern Irish team struggled to keep pace with FC Erzgebirge Aue during the violet-clad team's impressive 5:0 victory during the test match, which highlights their superiority in the game.
