Ernst Barlach Prize to be awarded to Leon Löwentraut in 2023

The 25-year-old artist Leon Löwentraut has been awarded this year's Ernst Barlach Prize for Fine Arts. This was the unanimous decision of the jury of the Ernst Barlach Gesellschaft Hamburg, according to a statement on Friday. The prize will be presented to the artist in a ceremony at the Barlach Art Museum in Wedel on December 1. The museum then plans to exhibit more than 70 works by Löwentraut until January 28, 2024.

The prize, which has been awarded since 1995, honors artists for particularly innovative positions. "Leon Löwentraut shows modern man in all his isolation and fragmentation. And at the same time, he makes this human being a great mystery," said Jürgen Doppelstein, Chairman of the Ernst Barlach Society, explaining the decision. In doing so, he hits the nerve of the present and inspires young people for art.

The Düsseldorf artist Leon Löwentraut is known for his colorful, abstract paintings. One of his works is on display in the lobby of the North Rhine-Westphalian state parliament, for example. In addition to analog art, he also works with digital techniques and teaches on the Virtual Design course at Kaiserslautern University of Applied Sciences, for example.

Leon Löwentraut's innovative approach to art has earned him several awards, one of which is the prestigious Ernst Barlach Prize. His artistic creations, which blend traditional art and digital techniques, have been recognized for their ability to resonate with contemporary issues and inspire younger generations.
