Erfurt Zoo welcomes zebra foal Edgar
Striped, fluffy and still a little wobbly on his feet - that's how zebra foal Edgar recently presented himself at Erfurt Zoo Park. He was born a week ago and has been given the same name as the son of a zookeeper born the day before, the zoo park announced on Friday. Edgar is the eighth foal of Damara zebra mare Malaika. Over the last few days, he has not only gotten to know his small herd, but also other residents of the enclosure, such as sable antelopes and ostriches.
Damara zebras are very social animals and live in small family groups or larger herds, according to a statement from the zoo park. The foals are carried to term for twelve weeks, but are able to stand up and follow their mother shortly after birth. In human care, they can live up to 40 years.
Visitors to Erfurt Zoo Park can now observe the interactions between Edgar, the newborn zebra foal, and his social animal companions, including sable antelopes and ostriches. With the addition of Edgar, the zoo has a total of eight Damara zebra foals that have thrived in human care, demonstrating their longevity, which can extend up to 40 years.
