Prominent virologist Hendrik Streeck is vying for the Bundestag. The 47-year-old clinched a vote within the Bonn district chapter of the CDU, serving as the Christian Democrats' chosen local candidate for the 2025 Bundestag election. Streeck raked in an impressive 71% of the votes, according to a CDU representative who spoke with dpa. This securities his position as the CDU's direct candidate in the Bonn constituency. Streeck outranked the CDU district chairperson, Christoph Jansen, who garnered 29% of the votes.
Streeck serves as the head of the Institute for Virology at the University Hospital Bonn. During the coronavirus pandemic, he rose to national prominence through countless media interviews. Streeck offered insights such as the importance of not downplaying the virus while also avoiding unnecessary fear-mongering.
A historically charged constituency
Streeck had previously aligned himself with the CDU even before the pandemic, as he himself acknowledged. His aspirations for a Bundestag bid were made public in November 2023.
The Bundestag election is scheduled for late September 2025. In the 2021 Bundestag election, the Green Party's Katrin Babette Uhlig secured the Bonn constituency. However, this constituency holds significant historical value for the CDU – Konrad Adenauer once won an election there.
