- Eon survey: summer holidays remain fuel-driven
The car remains, despite all climate discussions, the most popular means of transport for a majority of Bavarian vacationers heading to their summer holidays, according to a new survey. This summer, 52 percent of the Free State's residents plan to travel, and of these, 55 percent will do so by internal combustion engine car. This was found by the polling institute Civey in a survey for the energy company Eon. In second place came the airplane with 24 percent, while only 8 percent planned to take the train. The rest opted for other means of transport such as ships or electric cars.
The pollsters surveyed around 5,000 people nationwide at the end of May and beginning of June, with the results being representative of the adult population aged 18 and over, both nationwide and in the federal states.
However, some respondents expressed the intention to pay more attention to the sustainability of their future holidays: More than 13 percent of Bavarian vacationers said they would increasingly avoid flying in the future; likewise, 13 percent said they would increasingly travel by train.
Over two-thirds of Bavarian participants want to travel to Europe, 30 percent have a holiday destination in Germany, and 17 percent plan long-distance trips outside of Europe. The most popular destination for Bavarian European travelers is Italy with 36 percent, followed by Austria (24 percent) and Croatia (16 percent). Among domestic travelers, the North and Baltic Seas are the most popular with a combined share of 46 percent.
During their summer holidays, many Bavarian vacationers choose to travel by car, as revealed in the Eon-commissioned survey. Some respondents, acknowledging the importance of sustainability, expressed their intent to reduce air travel and increase train usage in the future for their holidays.
