Environmental organizations file suit against federal government

Environmental organizations want to oblige the German government to implement an effective programme to achieve climate targets. The Berlin-Brandenburg Higher Administrative Court is today dealing with corresponding complaints from Deutsche Umwelthilfe (DUH) and Naturschutz Deutschland (BUND). According to a court spokesperson, a verdict will be announced on November 30.

According to the court, it intends to hear further complaints from the environmentalists in February 2024. According to its Federal Managing Director Jürgen Resch, Umwelthilfe has filed a total of five climate lawsuits against the German government. The current cases concern the climate targets in the transport and buildings sectors.

In the view of the plaintiffs, the measures planned to date are not sufficient to comply with the maximum quantities of climate-damaging greenhouse gases in the individual sectors. "The German government is deliberately disregarding climate targets," said Resch before the hearing. The lawsuit is intended to force them to comply with their own laws and implement effective CO2 reduction measures. "Everything that is reasonable must be tackled".

The federal government's climate policies and processes are under scrutiny by environmental associations, as they believe their measures are insufficient to meet the climate targets. These associations, including DUH and BUND, are advocating for the implementation of more effective CO2 reduction measures.
