Environmental aid calls for the abolition of discount days

Environmental Action Germany (DUH) has called on retailers to abolish discount days such as Black Friday (November 24) and Cyber Monday (November 27). According to Deutsche Umwelthilfe (DUH), these and similar campaign days generate billions in sales at the expense of the environment, the climate and future generations. "Instead of encouraging the waste of resources, retailers should focus on a continuous range of durable products and repair services," it said.

DUH called on consumers to use functional goods for as long as possible, have defective products repaired or opt for refurbished devices when purchasing.

On discount days such as Black Friday and Cyber Monday, many retailers lure consumers with sometimes substantial price reductions, especially online. According to critics, such campaign days do not encourage necessary purchases. Umwelthilfe pointed out the large quantities of returns that occur after such days. "If retailers are serious about their promises on climate protection and waste avoidance, then the consumer frenzy on Black Friday must finally come to an end," said DUH Federal Managing Director Barbara Metz.

Retailers should consider shifting their focus from discount days like Black Friday and Cyber Monday, which negatively impact the environment and climate, towards promoting durable products and repair services. The excessive use of the internet during these sales events also contributes to increased carbon emissions.
