- Environmental activists have enacted a prohibition on the island of Sylt.
After an incident at Sylt Airport, individuals involved in the environmental group "Last Generation" have been restricted from the island: "A 14-day stay prohibition has been imposed on the three individuals," a representative from the Flensburg Police Directorate told the German Press Agency. This prohibition extends until August 23rd.
Notably, people arriving on Sylt through train, ferry, or plane will not be screened due to this ban, as explained by the spokesperson, citing resource constraints. The enforcement of the ban will be monitored during the daily presence on the island.
The police have increased their presence on Sylt during the summer, with officers aware of the "Last Generation" situation, as stated by the representative. If the individuals are located during patrols or operations on the island, appropriate actions will be taken.
Investigation by the Prosecutor's Office
The Flensburg Public Prosecutor's Office is currently investigating the three "Last Generation" alliance members. They are being charged with property damage and trespassing. A spokesperson from the prosecutor's office noted that none of the accused are from Schleswig-Holstein. The court date has yet to be announced.
Two "Last Generation" demonstrators temporarily affixed themselves to the ground near a private jet at Sylt Airport on August 10. Their plan to spray the plane with color was thwarted by the swift intervention of airport staff.
A third activist was halted by police and taken away at the fence line. The women were removed from the ground and taken away in a police vehicle. The activists had previously cut a hole in the airport fence to gain access to the restricted area.
"Last Generation": Protest Fails
"Last Generation" aimed to spray the phrase "Oil kills" on the private jet, according to Christian Bergemann, a spokesperson for "Last Generation". They believe that affluent individuals significantly contribute to climate change. The owners of private jets, limousines, and superyachts, in their view, would not voluntarily relinquish such luxuries. To reduce these emissions, they advocate for necessary legislation.
Orange Attack at the Airport (June 2023)
Five "Last Generation" activists on Sylt spray-painted a private jet on the airport premises with orange color and stuck themselves to its surface in June 2023. The estimated damage to the plane alone is at least one million euros, as calculated by the Flensburg Public Prosecutor's Office.
The investigation into the property damage and trespassing charges against the three individuals from "Last Generation" is being handled by the Flensburg Public Prosecutor's Office, as mentioned by a spokesperson. The German Press Agency reported the 14-day ban imposed on them by the Flensburg Police Directorate.
