Entry for Russians: German politicians demand consequences for Hungary
"Putin's spies and assassins have already caused significant damage in the EU and Germany," Weber continued. The EU heads of state and government must clarify this issue at their next summit. "There must be consequences."
A spokesperson for Federal Interior Minister Nancy Faeser (SPD) also demanded this. "The risk of Russian espionage and sabotage is high and has increased since the beginning of Russia's illegal attack on Ukraine." The EU countries must therefore increase their protection instead of creating "potential gateways," they told "BamS".
Brandenburg's Interior Minister Michael Stübgen (CDU) called for controls at all EU borders with Hungary, which is legally possible within the EU. Hungary's EU neighbors Austria, Croatia, Slovakia, and Romania are now called upon, he told "BamS". "That an EU country allows Russians to enter virtually uncontrolled is unacceptable."
Hungary's Prime Minister Viktor Orban had signed a decree at the beginning of July, widening the fast-track procedure for issuing visas in Hungary to Russia and Belarus, as well as six other countries. Citizens of these countries can now apply for so-called national cards to work in Hungary.
The EU leaders need to address the escalating threat of Russian espionage and sabotage within the EU, given its significant impact previously and currently in member states like Germany. The EU should also strengthen its border controls to prevent unchecked Russian entry, as seen in Hungary, to maintain security.
