Bundesliga 2 - "Enough quality there": Selimbegovic believes Rostock can be saved
New coach Mersad Selimbegovic firmly believes that FC Hansa Rostock will stay in the league. "Club, city, team, fans - there's a lot in it. It wasn't very difficult for me to make the decision," said the 41-year-old Bosnian on Tuesday at his official introduction to the team in 16th place in the Bundesliga 2. "There is enough quality here. I believe in this squad and these boys."
Selimbegovic worked for long-time Rostock rivals Jahn Regensburg for a total of 17 years as a player, youth coach, co-coach and head coach. This experience was an important criterion in his appointment on Monday. "Mersad was able to help shape the club in Regensburg over many years and was able to develop a lot there," said Hansa's sporting director Kristian Walter. "He has also been able to gain a lot of experience in the area in which we now find ourselves, namely the relegation battle."
Walter confirmed that he had negotiated with a second candidate to succeed Alois Schwartz in addition to Selimbegovic, "because we as a club did not want to be left without an alternative." However, the long-serving Regensburg man was the favorite from the outset.
"Mersad and I have known each other for a long time. We've met time and again in German soccer and have often played against each other," said Walter. "We always talk about player scouting. But of course we also do coach scouting to be prepared for all scenarios, to know the market and not have to shoot from the hip."
