The Kassel Police Department has established a new specialized protection unit called Mobile Einsatzkommando-Personenschutz Nord (MEK-PS) in response to increasing protection requirements in the northern region of Hesse. The creation of this unit will complement the existing fixed security units in Frankfurt and Wiesbaden and will focus on providing personal protection in North Hesse.

According to Hessian Police Headquarters Operations (HPE), this team will be comprised of seasoned officers with extensive personal protection experience and new recruits, both male and female, who have undergoing training. The MEK-PS will work in conjunction with the existing southern and western units, thus enhancing the operational capabilities of the commands in the Rhine-Main region.

President of the HPE, Malte Neutzler, elaborated that this development would also bolster the strength of the commands responsible for protecting permanent state protectees. The newly established team will handle protection details for a diverse array of individuals, ranging from government officials on official visits, over foreign dignitaries, diplomats, and delegations, to state and federal politicians, private individuals, and individuals under operational witness protection programmes, as well as prisoner transports.

These specialized units, which were consolidated under the Directorate Special Units Hessen in November 2023, are now situated in various locations across Hessen. The HPE oversees the four main units: Special Operations Command (SEK), Mobile Operations Command (MEK), Negotiation Group (VG), and Personal Protection (PS). Together, these units play a crucial role in ensuring the security of Hessian citizens and individuals involved in state visits, amongst others.
