English Theatre has hope: interim solution in sight

The English-language stage was actually due to leave its premises in Frankfurt's banking district at the end of the year. But now it will continue for the time being - perhaps even permanently after a break.

Culture - English Theatre has hope: interim solution in sight

The English Theatre Frankfurt is looking to the future with growing confidence. "Nothing has been signed yet, but we are pretty sure that we can stay in the Galileo Tower", director Daniel Nicolai told the German Press Agency (dpa). However, the theater is preparing for the fact that it will have to temporarily move to another venue.

According to its own information, the English Theatre is the largest English-language stage on the European mainland. It is located in the basement of a high-rise building diagonally opposite the theater and opera. The building has changed hands several times. The original owner, Dresdner Bank, merged with Commerzbank, which sold the building to the international investor Capitalland. Because the building has to be handed over empty at the end of the year, Commerzbank filed an action for eviction with the regional court in the summer.

According to a court spokeswoman, however, no date has yet been set in this matter. As the plaintiff will no longer be responsible next year, Nicolai assumes that the issue will "disappear into thin air". According to the director, the European Central Bank (ECB) wants to move into the Galileo Tower and the theater could remain as a tenant in the basement.

When asked, the ECB said: "We are in advanced negotiations with the owners of the Galileo building. As a long-standing supporter of the English Theatre, we hope that a solution can be found to give this popular cultural institution security for the coming years."

According to Nicolai, the former Fritz Remond Theater at the zoo is being discussed as an interim venue. A children's and youth theater is to move in there in the future, with a theater workshop using the space beforehand. The English Theatre can imagine performing in the building together. According to Nicolai, the first premiere could take place on April 13, 2024. As there are fewer seats available, the schedule has been changed as a precaution: The comedy "Sylvia", in which a woman plays a poodle, would be shown.

A musical comedy about Shakespeare ("Something Rotten") is currently running. As with all English Theatre musicals, demand for tickets is high. Performances are planned until March 31 - if the theater is allowed to remain in its old premises until then.
