Aircraft construction - Engine maintenance N3 expands site to 1200 specialists

The engine maintenance site of Lufthansa Technik AG and Rolls-Royce near Arnstadt is being expanded and almost 300 new jobs are to be created. N3 Engine Overhaul Services, which overhauls and repairs aircraft engines, is planning investments over the next two years, the company announced on Thursday in the "Erfurter Kreuz" industrial estate. New factory areas will be built, existing buildings extended and machinery and equipment purchased. The number of employees is to increase from the current 920 to 1200 skilled workers.

According to the company, the parent companies Lufthansa Technik and Rolls-Royce intend to invest a total of around 150 million euros in the Thuringian site. N3 will thus continue to distinguish itself as an important European location in the global maintenance network for Rolls-Royce aircraft engines.

The maintenance business picked up speed again very quickly in 2022 after the coronavirus years, explained N3 Managing Director Carsten Behrens. The demand for engine overhauls will be huge in the coming decades. The investment will increase N3's capacity to overhaul 250 engines per year. The current maximum is 160 engines per year.

In 2023, around 140 engines will be overhauled, and the target for 2024 is just under 200. "The extensive expansion during ongoing operations with increasing capacity utilization and many new employees is a challenge for the entire team," explained the Managing Director. There is also good and close coordination with the local authorities and institutions.

The approximately 300 additional positions are to be filled through in-house training, qualifications and new hires. A welcoming culture is important in order to attract specialists from other federal states and abroad to N3 and Thuringia. According to the management, it would be helpful if federal and state policy simplified the recognition of foreign educational qualifications and the issuing of visas.

N3 was launched at Erfurter Kreuz in 2007. In the 15 years since then, more than 1400 engines have been overhauled.
