Energy supply - Energy service provider VSE invests millions in grid expansion
More Heat Pumps, Wallboxes, Data Centers, as well as Solar and Wind Power: Energy supplier VSE is investing around 360 million Euro in the expansion of the grid infrastructure over the next three years to meet growing demands, as the company announced in Saarbrucken. The lion's share of around 235 million Euro will flow into the energy infrastructure, and approximately 47 million Euro will go towards the expansion of the fiber-optic network.
The expansion of the electric charging infrastructure is also a focus. The VSE Group is currently the largest operator of public and private charging points in Saarland, with around 1,000 charging points. Planned are further millions of investments, especially for fast chargers in parking lots. The VSE also supports the development of communal heating planning, to which cities and municipalities are obligated until 2028.
We see ourselves as a partner for municipalities and the regional economy to make Saarland "future-proof in terms of energy and digitization," it was stated. Climate change and energy dependencies leave no other choice. "To make that happen, we are demanding more tempo in the implementation of the energy transition, faster approval procedures, and practical solutions," said Board Member Hanno Dornseifer.
Revenue is rising, electricity output is falling
Revenue grew by nearly 38 percent in 2023 compared to the previous year, to around 1.86 billion Euro, as the company reported. The main reasons were the increase in energy prices on the procurement markets and higher material costs. Electricity generation fell by nearly seven percent to 4,824 Gigawatt-hours. A decrease in industrial large-scale consumers due to the deteriorating economic situation was the main reason.
The demand for renewable energies has significantly increased in 2023. Companies and private households have mainly switched to photovoltaics. In March, there were around 44,300 PV systems, including reported balcony power plants, on the grid in Saarland, it was stated.
- VSE's investment in Saarbrücken includes a focus on expanding the electric charging infrastructure with wallboxes, aiming to become a leader in the region.
- The Saarland-based energy supplier is planning additional investments in fast chargers for parking lots, to support the growing demand for electric vehicles.
- As part of the energy transition, VSE is urging faster approval processes and practical solutions in Saarland, with a goal of accelerating the transition towards renewable energy sources.
- In the quarterly figures, it was noted that Saarland has seen a significant increase in the demand for heat pumps, a crucial component of the energy transition.
- To ensure a reliable energy supply during the energy transition, Saarland's grid infrastructure is undergoing a major expansion, as evidenced by VSE's 360 million Euro investment over the next three years.
- VSE's data center operations in Saarbrücken are another key component of the energy transition, as they help reduce energy consumption by utilizing energy-efficient technologies and optimizing data center cooling systems.
