Energy industry calls on citizens to save gas

Despite full gas storage facilities, an emergency situation cannot be completely ruled out. This is because, should there be a very cold winter, the storage facilities could empty quickly.

Energy industry calls on citizens to save gas

The energy industry has called on citizens to use gas sparingly this winter too. The storage facilities are full and there is no longer any need for laws like those of a year ago, said the head of the industry association BDEW, Kerstin Andreae, in the Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung newspaper. "Nevertheless, we are appealing to the population to use as little gas as possible."

There are factors that are beyond our control. If it gets really cold for two months, the storage tanks empty and have to be refilled. And nobody has to pay for every kilowatt hour that is saved, said Andreae. "The lower the consumption, the lower the costs and the higher the energy security."

Concerns about extremely low temperatures

At the beginning of November, the Association of Storage Operators stated that despite full gas storage facilities, an emergency situation could not be ruled out in the event of a very cold winter. In the event of extremely low temperatures such as in 2010, German storage facilities could be empty by the end of January. In such a scenario, the storage facilities could only be refilled in March.

Until the war in Ukraine, Germany obtained a large proportion of its natural gas via Russian pipelines. However, Russia stopped supplying it last year. Germany is now covering its demand via other supplier countries and is building terminals to import liquefied natural gas.

  1. Despite the full gas storage facilities, the energy industry is still urging consumers to save energy this winter, as raw materials like gas are crucial for many households and businesses.
  2. The head of BDEW, Kerstin Andreae, mentioned that while there are no longer any legal demands, it's essential to use less gas, as gas prices and weather conditions remain unpredictable.
  3. In an extreme weather scenario, if temperatures drop significantly like they did in 2010, the current gas storage might deplete by the end of January, forcing suppliers to wait until March to refill them.
  4. Given the current energy context, with concerns about emergency situations and Russia's halted gas supply, it's vital for consumers to consciously monitor their gas consumption and contribute to energy saving efforts.
