Statistics - Energy consumption in industry down in 2022
Energy consumption in Rhineland-Palatinate industry fell by 16.6 percent in 2022 compared to the previous year. This was announced by the State Statistical Office in Bad Ems on Monday. This means that industry recorded the sharpest decline in energy consumption in a comparison of federal states last year, according to the report. The national average decline in 2022 was 9.1 percent.
"The significant decline in energy consumption is mainly due to high energy prices," said the Federal Statistical Office in Wiesbaden, commenting on the nationwide figures. Energy-intensive industries reduced production in 2022 - partly as a result of the Russian attack on Ukraine.
In Rhineland-Palatinate, the chemical industry accounted for the largest share of energy use in 2022 at more than 68%. However, demand here fell by 21.1% compared to 2021. Natural gas remained the most important energy source, accounting for around 46% of consumption. This corresponds to a decrease of 14.6% compared to the previous year.
