For Max Hopp, the 2023 darts year will end in a flop. However, another tournament in the near future is more important to him than a World Cup ticket.

End of a disappointing darts year: No World Championship for Hopp

The year 2023 ends with another sporting disappointment for former German darts champion Max Hopp. In the Super League, in which a ticket for the World Championships in London (December 15 to January 3) is played out, Hopp lost 3:6 to the rather unknown Kai Gotthardt in the round of 16 late on Thursday evening.

After 2022 and 2023, this will be the third time in a row that the "Maximiser" will not be at Alexandra Palace. The days when Hopp was the German number one are long gone.

For the 27-year-old, the World Cup would have been something of a bonus after a very poor season. According to Hopp himself, it is more important for him to win back a tour card at the so-called Q-School in January so that he can play more high-paying and important tournaments again in the future.

"It can click after years," said Hopp. Before the final day of the German Super League, three Germans had already qualified for the World Championships: World Championship semi-finalist Gabriel Clemens, Martin Schindler and Ricardo Pietreczko.

Despite his participation in the PDC's Super League, Max Hopp's hopes for a World Championship title in London were dashed once again, losing in the round of 16 to Kai Gotthardt. Sifting through the Super League results, Hopp now needs to focus on regaining his tour card at the Q-School in January to increase his chances of participating in more high-paying darts events, such as the PDC events.
