Empty Castor container reaches Ahaus
An empty Castor container arrived in Ahaus in Münsterland early on Wednesday morning after a 170-kilometer journey without any problems. The aim of the test drive was to test the process of possible transports with radioactive waste. The heavy transport, which was accompanied by a massive police presence, departed from the Jülich Nuclear Waste Management Company (JEN) on Tuesday evening. The Castor container arrived at the interim storage facility in Ahaus at 2.37 a.m., said a police spokeswoman in Münster on Wednesday.
There were no disruptions. Two people had held a banner on a bridge over the A2 highway near Oberhausen-Königshardt, the spokeswoman said. However, they had not disrupted the transport. In the arrival town of Ahaus, three tractor drivers protested against nuclear transports on a farm road at around 2.00 am. The drivers are now facing criminal charges because they had not registered their action in advance.
On Tuesday evening, around 150 people had already demonstrated in Ahaus near the interim storage facility for radioactive waste against the planned test drive. An initial test run had already taken place two weeks ago, which, according to the police and organizers, went off without a hitch.
The Castor container, carrying nuclear waste, was transported from Jülich Nuclear Waste Management Company for a test drive of nuclear power waste transport process. Despite protests from several individuals and groups, the nuclear power container reached Ahaus's interim storage facility safely.
