Employers: Onay's plans for City not capable of winning a majority
A regional employers' association has welcomed the fact that the SPD has terminated the red-green coalition in the council of Lower Saxony's state capital. In particular, the mayor's plans for Hanover's city center are not capable of winning a majority, criticized Volker Schmidt, Managing Director of the General Employers' Association (AGV) Hanover and Surroundings, on Monday. The Social Democrats' decision was geared towards the interests of the future, he said.
"The city's reputation has suffered enough damage," said Schmidt. Now there is a chance for a fresh start in the development of the city center in terms of transport policy, which takes into account "the interests of trade, industry and employees".
Hanover's Lord Mayor Belit Onay (Greens) had also sparked criticism with his internationally acclaimed plan to create a virtually car-free city center by 2030. The state capital presented this concept in mid-September. "Car-free means that there are not too many cars in the city," Onay said at the time.
The SPD's decision to end the coalition in Hanover's council could potentially align with the interests of various municipalities' parties, such as the employers, who have critiqued the mayor's car-free city center plans. Volker Schmidt, from the General Employers' Association Hanover and Surroundings, has expressed hope for a revised transport policy that considers the needs of trade, industry, and employees in the city's development.
