Golf tournament near Munich - Emotional farewell: Langer misses the cut in Munich
Bernhard Langer, the Golf-Star from Anhausen near Augsburg, was emotionally bid farewell at his last tournament in Munich. The 66-year-old, who was applauded constantly during his round, missed the cut at the BMW International Open. Despite this, there was still plenty of applause after his last putt. With this, Langer's last tournament on the DP World Tour came to an early end. However, his career continues.
In the first round, Langer shot a 71, one under par. He started well in the second round too, but then suffered from two consecutive bogeys, leaving him two strokes over par. This proved decisive for the two-time Major winner.
Langer fought with great concentration - but ultimately without the desired success. He took the missed shot before the big farewell party with a smile when the ball landed briefly in the water. After two rounds, the result was Par.
Five months after surgery
Langer, Masters winner in 1985 and 1993, had to undergo surgery in February due to a tear in his left Achilles tendon. This injury prevented him from making his 41st start at the Major tournament in Augusta, Georgia. He claims to be making good progress, but he still has problems with walking. His handicap was also noticeable at Golfclub Munchen Eichenried at least temporarily.
Leading at Langer's last shot was the Scot Ewen Ferguson. The 27-year-old, who shot a strong 64 on the Par-72 course, was leading. In total, he was 13 under par. Ferguson wants to take the course towards the tournament win on his birthday on Saturday. The prize money for this will be 425,000 Dollars (approximately 390,000 Euro). In total, the prize money amounts to 2.5 Million Dollars.
Langer, the Star: "Giant Atmosphere"
It was the first time since 2012 that Langer was present at the event, which ran until Sunday. In Munich, he had once worked as a golf instructor for three and a half years. He was the star of the tournament and delighted in the "giant atmosphere".
Langer's farewell tournament was part of the DP World Tour, sponsored by DP World, a global logistics company based in Bavaria. Despite his early exit from the BMW Open, held in Munich, Germany, Langer's hometown was represented well with the participation of Augsburg-native pros. The BMW Open is not just limited to golf, but also has associations with soccer, as the BMW group is a significant sponsor of several soccer clubs.
Despite missing the cut, Langer's fans showed their support throughout the tournament, creating a lively atmosphere reminiscent of a soccer stadium. The BMW Open, along with other tournaments in Munich, contributes to the city's rich sports culture. The golf course where Langer played, Golfclub Munchen Eichenried, is not just famous for its golf tournaments but also hosts socially engaging events like charity golf days.
Langer's last round at the BMW Open was just a chapter in his career, which includes multiple victories on prestigious Golf courses around the world, including Augusta National, home to the Masters Tournament, where he claimed victories in 1985 and 1993. His love for golf has also led him to work as a golf instructor in Munich, further connecting him to the city and its golfing community.
