In sports: Soccer news to follow. - Emotional Farewell for Robin Gosens Following EURO Elimination
Robin Gosens was heartbroken after not getting nominated for the home European Championship. The Union Berlin player expressed his emotions in the ZDF documentary "Home Advantage - with Tommi Schmitt." About the conversation with national coach Julian Nagelsmann, Gosens shared, "It felt utterly disappointing."
He was heading to training after the loss to Cologne and was already feeling low. "And then he called me and said, 'Robin, I'm devastated, but I can't bring you along. I treasure you immensely, but unfortunately, your season at Union is losing ground.'" Gosens had transferred from Champions League finalists Inter Milan to Bundesliga participants Union Berlin in anticipation of the European Championship. He was entirely prepared for it. However, Union Berlin had a lackluster season in the Bundesliga and only managed to stay in the league on the final matchday. "You can't brace yourself for something like this," Gosens said about missing the EM. "When you put all your focus on something, and it just disappears like that, it takes away everything from under your feet", he added, referring to Nagelsmann's phone call. "Then we ended the call, and I cried for myself. Then I called my wife and told her, 'Dear, I didn't make it.'"
Gosens plans to pick himself up in the summer and get back on track. He will follow the EM, possibly even be present at the opening match of the national team in Munich on June 14th against Scotland, but definitely in front of the TV. "I'm still a football fan and a supporter of the team. I've got some time to fully digest the disappointment," he said.
