Emergency services rescue 74-year-old from apartment fire
A 74-year-old man was slightly injured in a fire in his apartment in Demmin (Mecklenburg Lake District). A neighbor informed the emergency services about the fire, according to the police on Saturday. When the emergency services arrived, the resident was reportedly sitting in a smouldering armchair in the living room of his apartment. Due to a disability, he is said to have been unable to leave on his own. He is said to have been taken to hospital for further medical treatment.
According to the police's initial findings, a curtain caught fire after being touched by a lit cigarette. The flames are said to have spread through the living room. Objects worth around 2000 euros are said to have been damaged.
The apartment and the rest of the apartment building are reportedly still habitable. The police have started an investigation on suspicion of negligent arson.
The emergency services quickly extinguished the flames, preventing further damage to the apartment. Moreover, the incident served as a reminder of the importance of being vigilant during emergencies, especially when dealing with fire hazards.
