Emergency responders manage inferno at London's legendary Somerset House
Firefighters are battling flames in a section of the building's roof, according to a statement from the fire department. Two of their 32-meter (roughly 105 foot) tall ladders are being utilized for this purpose.
The reason behind the fire is still unknown, the statement mentioned. Due to this, Somerset House has been shut off to the general public as they tackle the situation.
This structure was constructed in the 1500s initially, but it was demolished and rebuilt in the 1700s.
The Treaty of London was signed within these walls in 1604, marking the end of the 19-year-long Anglo-Spanish War.
Nowadays, Somerset House serves as a venue for creative events and exhibitions. They had planned a dance battle for Saturday in the building's open-air courtyard, featuring dance showcases, workshops, live DJs, and a massive outdoor party culminating in a dance-off between the four corners of London.
"All personnel and visitors are safe, and the site is closed," Somerset House stated on their website. "The London Fire Brigade responded promptly, and we're collaborating closely with them to prevent the fire from spreading further," they added.
This is an ongoing situation, and we will provide updates as they become available.
The fire at Somerset House has attracted international attention, with reports spreading across the UK and the world. Despite the fire, the planned dance battle in collaborations with dance groups from different parts of the UK is unfortunately cancelled.
