Embarrassing things from the supermarket: The new "Discounter" series

A little bit "Stromberg", a little bit "jerks": The improv comedy "Die Discounter" continues to create embarrassing moments in season 3. But does the concept still work?

Embarrassing things from the supermarket: The new "Discounter" series

The TV comedy "Stromberg" made the mockumentary genre, a fictional documentary, big in Germany from 2004. More than ten years later, the series "jerks" with Christian Ulmen and Fahri Yardim surprised audiences with improvised texts.

The young makers of the Amazon hit "Die Discounter" combine both formats and are quite successful with it. From Wednesday (22.11.), the streaming service will be showing the ten episodes of the third season.

The focus is once again on the young and work-shy team of supermarket manager Thorsten (Marc Hosemann), who, like Bernd Stromberg in the past, goes through life rather awkwardly both privately and professionally and is always looking out for his own advantage. For example, when he wants to come across as diverse as possible in a commercial for his discount store and unintentionally uses racist and homophobic clichés in the process.

Or when he tries to impress the kebab seller with an order in Turkish and asks every halfway Arab-looking customer for help.

It's embarrassing moments like these in which the series, which is based on a Dutch format, still shines. The often slightly bashful looks of the protagonists into the camera are still a key component of the "Discounter" humor, which attracts young people in particular.

In the third season, the "Kolinski" supermarket team has to move from Altona to the low-income Hamburg district of Billstedt. Store detective Jonas (played by theater actor Merlin Sandmeyer), who has become a fan favorite - including on social media - is given significantly more airtime.

Heinz Strunk makes a guest appearance

Behind the improv comedy are the Hamburg twins Emil and Oskar Belton (24) and Bruno Alexander (24), who, together with two friends and their production company "Kleine Brüder", also created the not entirely adult series "Intimate". The creative filmmakers recently even received the Television Award jury's sponsorship prize for this.

The new "Discounter" episodes, which are very entertaining at around 25 minutes, also feature a number of guest appearances. For example, author Heinz Strunk ("Der goldene Handschuh") as a strict supermarket manager, who borrows a few lines from his character in the Ballermann series "Last Exit Schinkenstraße". Soccer star Mats Hummels and singer Peter Fox have also appeared in previous seasons.

The comedy series "Die Discounter" has gained popularity on streaming platforms, with new episodes set to release on November 22. This media revelation comes as the show's creators, including Emil and Oskar Belton and Bruno Alexander, leverage the power of Internet streaming for their improv comedy. In the upcoming season, viewers can expect guest appearances from notable figures like author Heinz Strunk and soccer star Mats Hummels, showcasing the series' wide-reaching appeal on the digital streaming landscape.
