Bundesliga 2 - Elversberg loses 1:5 at Hertha BSC

SV Elversberg, promoted to the second division, lost 1:5 (1:2) at Hertha BSC. Linus Gechter (12th minute) and Florian Niederlechner (23rd) scored in the first half for the former Bundesliga side in front of 33,097 spectators at Berlin's Olympiastadion. Elversberg's Thore Jacobsen (15) scored the equalizer to make it 1:1 on Sunday. After the break, Niederlechner and Jonjoe Kenny scored twice in the space of nine minutes (62nd and 69th) in freezing temperatures.

While it was the first success for Berlin after three draws in a row, Saarland suffered their fifth defeat of the season after two recent victories. However, the league newcomers remain sixth, ahead of the Berliners (8th).

The hosts were lucky not to concede several goals in the first ten minutes. A goal by Paul Wanner was disallowed due to a handball (4th). Shortly afterwards, keeper Tjark Ernst saved twice in quick succession (8').

Berlin's first three goals were also more of a coincidence. Twice, the Saarlanders failed to clear the ball sufficiently in the five-meter area. Gechter and Niederlechner converted the rebounds. Jacobsen equalized with a shot from around 20 metres to make it 1:1, which Hertha keeper Tjark Ernst saw too late. Niederlechner was also lucky with his other two goals: his unmarked shot to make it 3-1 slipped under the arms of SVE goalkeeper Nicolas Kristof and the ball was deflected when he scored to make it 4-1.
