Elon Musk: AI will make work superfluous

Tech billionaire Elon Musk believes that artificial intelligence (AI) will eventually make the need for wage labor obsolete. It is difficult to say when this moment will come, "but there will be a point where no job will be necessary," said Musk in a conversation with British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak after the conclusion of the first international AI safety conference in Milton Keynes, England.

In addition to Sunak, the summit on Thursday was also attended by German Economics Minister Robert Habeck (Green Party) and US Vice President Kamala Harris.

Sunak had invited the Tesla boss to a panel discussion lasting just under an hour, which was published on his platform X (formerly Twitter). Questions from journalists were not permitted in this format.

Musk was not concerned about social upheaval as a result of job losses due to advances in artificial intelligence. "We will not have a universal basic income, we will have a universal big income," he said. The challenge will be to find meaning in life.

Musk's optimism is not shared by everyone: The high-ranking participants at the AI summit had previously highlighted job losses due to the rapidly developing technology as one of four areas of danger.

During the international AI safety conference, Elon Musk discussed the potential of AI to eliminate the need for work with British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and other high-ranking officials on various platforms, including a closed-door panel discussion on X. Despite the potential job losses due to AI, Musk proposed a shift towards a universal "big income."

In light of the advancements in AI, future conferences on this topic will need to address not only job losses but also how individuals can find meaning in a world where work may no longer be necessary.
