Swimming for physically disabled individuals - Elite athletes compete in Berlin championships.
Several world-class athletes and para swimmers are set to compete at the 38th International German Championships for Para Swimming (IDM), which will take place from May 30th to July 2nd at the Swimming and Diving Hall in Berlin's Europasportpark. More than 600 participants from around 50 nations, including top German swimmers Elena Semechin and Taliso Engel, will take part in the event.
"The enthusiasm displayed undeniably solidifies Berlin's status as a permanent feature on the international Para Swimming calendar," remarks event manager Matthias Ulm in a press release dated Wednesday. "This year's IDM, boasting a rapid pool, is considered a top-notch trial event for the 2024 Paralympics."
Some of the international athletes confirmed for the championships include Maisie Summers-Newton (GBR), Chantalle Zijderveld (NED), Diego López Díaz (MEX), Gabriel Araújo (BRA), and Rogier Dorsman (NED). Fifteen winners from the Tokyo 2021 Paralympics are also on the participant list. The interest in the competition is high as it coincides with races from the World Series. For numerous countries, the IDM serves as the final opportunity to qualify for the Paris 2024 Paralympics (scheduled for August 28th to September 8th).
