Electricity price package: question marks for energy-intensive industry
Lower Saxony's Minister President Stephan Weil believes that the German government's plan to reduce the price of electricity for businesses is a step in the right direction. The SPD politician announced on Thursday that small and medium-sized companies that are not energy-intensive in particular could benefit from the electricity price package, with initial calculations suggesting a reduction of 1.5 cents per kilowatt hour.
"With regard to energy-intensive industry, however, there are still clear question marks at first glance," said Weil. At present, parts of the energy-intensive industry are not competitive due to high energy prices. "Changing this is the benchmark," said Weil, who has been campaigning for months for a state-supported industrial or bridge electricity price.
The federal government's electricity price package raises concerns for the energy-intensive industry, as it may not provide significant price reductions for this sector. Current high energy prices have made parts of the energy-intensive industry less competitive, highlighting the need for policy changes.
