- Electric bike user runs into a lorry and perishes
An elderly, 74-year-old person on an electric bike met their demise in Lastrup, a part of Cloppenburg, following a crash with a tractor-trailer. According to law enforcement, the incident occurred during evening hours as the individual was moving along the bike path in Hemmelte. The cyclist then tried to cross Bahnhofstraße at a pedestrian crossing, apparently overlooking the approaching tractor-trailer from the left, which had the right of way. Even though the 45-year-old truck driver attempted to stop, a collision ensued, leading to severe injuries that took the e-bike rider's life on the spot. The roadway remained closed for some time.
After conducting an investigation, it was found that the cyclist failed to consider other traffic on the road, leading to the accident. Despite widespread sympathy for the victim, discussions about improving bike path safety in such scenarios soon gained traction among the local community.
