The 2021 Bundestag election will have to be repeated in more Berlin constituencies than planned due to numerous errors. The Federal Constitutional Court in Karlsruhe ruled on Tuesday that voting must be repeated in 455 constituencies. The Bundestag had decided to repeat the vote in 431 districts at the end of 2022. However, the CDU/CSU demanded a much more extensive by-election and lodged an appeal in Karlsruhe. This has now been partially successful. There were numerous glitches during voting in Berlin in September 2021. There were too few ballot boxes at polling stations or ballot papers were missing. Some polling stations remained open after 6 pm. The ruling of the Federal Constitutional Court could change the result of the Bundestag election. The more than 2,200 constituencies in Berlin are part of the capital's twelve electoral districts. It will only be known whether the result in the respective constituencies will change and thus affect the Bundestag seats once the elections in the affected districts have been held again. The majority of the ruling traffic light coalition is not considered to be at risk. The situation is different for the Left Party. It failed to clear the five percent hurdle and was only able to enter the Bundestag with three direct mandates, two of which came from Berlin. If the party were to lose even one direct mandate in the by-election, it would no longer be represented in the Bundestag..aussiedlerbote.de

Federal Constitutional Court - Electoral officer: Partial rerun of Bundestag election in Berlin on February 11

The Constitutional Court had ruled that the 2021 Bundestag election would have to be repeated in just over a fifth of Berlin's constituencies due to numerous glitches. Both first and second votes are to be cast again. The court thus went slightly beyond the decision of the Bundestag, which had already decided on a partial rerun a year ago.
