Voting by mail - Electoral authorities urge voters to submit their ballot forms.
Christian Boden, the election manager, urges voters in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern to send in their postal votes as quickly as possible. On Monday, he said in Schwerin, "Please send your ballot papers to a Deutsche Post AG office in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern by June 6, 2024, or deliver them in person to the election office. Doing so will ensure your vote is counted on time." You can find the specific election offices where the ballot papers should be handed in in the provided election documents.
For voters who use the official election envelopes, it's free to send in their completed ballots through the mail. By June 9 at 6 p.m., the ballots must be at the designated location to be considered when counting the votes. This is your responsibility as a voter. In the previous elections held five years ago, approximately a quarter of the votes were cast through postal voting in the northeast.
On June 9, alongside the nationwide election of members of the European Parliament, voters in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern will be choosing their city and municipal councils, district councils, and voluntary mayors.
The Ministry of the Interior shares that there are about 10,000 seats and positions available to fill across Germany. In the 2019 local elections, nearly 57% of the approximately 1.3 million eligible voters exercised their right to vote. The turnout for the concurrent European elections was slightly higher. According to an infratest dimap survey commissioned by NDR, similar participation levels are expected this year.
