The recent European election saw the AfD emerge as the clear winner, securing 31.8% of the votes in Saxony, a remarkable increase compared to their 25.3% in 2019. The party also claimed the top spot in Leipzig, Chemnitz, and Dresden. The CDU, led by Minister President Michael Kretschmer, took the runner-up position with 21.8%, while the Left Party (Linke) earned 4.9%, the Greens 5.9%, and the SPD 6.9%. Voter turnout hit 69.4%.

The outcome of the city and municipal council elections remained undetermined on Monday morning. In Dresden, the AfD garnered 19.5% of the votes, edging the CDU (18.0%). The Greens (14.5%), the SPD (9.0%), the Team Zastrow led by former FDP politician Holger Zastrow (8.1%), and the Left Party (7.7%) were also in the mix. The Free Saxons, a right-wing extremist party, tallied 1.5% and secured a seat in the Dresden City Council.

The Union garnered 18.9% of votes in the Leipzig City Council election, with the Left Party (17.5%) close behind. The AfD (17.0%), the Greens (15.0%), and the SPD (12.1%) also made their mark. In Chemnitz, the AfD took the lead with 24.3%, surpassing the CDU (21.3%). The SPD (12.4%), the Left Party (7.6%), and the Greens (7.3%) followed. The Free Saxons, along with Pro Chemnitz, captured 4.9% of the votes and will hold three seats in the city council.

André Wendt, an AfD politician and Dresden district chairman, alluded to the impending Landtag election on September 1st and claimed his party's right to rule. "The current election results provide us with a strong push towards the upcoming Landtag election. As all relevant parties have declined to work with us, we need to gain a few more percentage points to form a government alone," he stated. "We are prepared to govern and not just for show - we owe it to the citizens of Saxony!"

On Monday morning, parties will present their preliminary insights into the election during press conferences in Dresden.
