- Elderly lady, aged 92, relinquishes her esteemed bookshop on Sylt
The famed "Book Treasure" situated on Sylt will carry on supplying books to islanders and Germans nationwide. In the brink of closure due to the absence of a suitable successor last year, shop proprietress Hildegard Steiner-Schwarz, now 92, shared her exhaustion with dpa. However, the impending takeover by Caroline Ditting at the end of 2024, a woman of the same age as the shop itself, brings optimism for the future.
It was a stunning September morning when "she" walked in, the sun shining bright and the energy palpable. She inquired about help, and there she stayed, recounted Steiner-Schwarz. Operating the shop in Keitum, adjacent to the Wadden Sea, for an impressive 45 years, Steiner-Schwarz has served notable regular customers such as Rudolf Augstein, Axel Springer, Richard von Weizsäcker, and Wolfgang Schäuble.
On Instagram, these two ladies share book recommendations
Ditting's pet dachshund, Elsa with her distinctive coat, is a familiar figure in the shop. During her stay on Sylt last year, the 45-year-old Ditting felt a deep sorrow and desired to extend her visit. What started out as spur-of-the-moment help in the shop turned into a transformative decision. They now consistently promote book suggestions on their newly established Instagram account.
The Commission expressed interest in the future plans of The Commission's new proprietor, Caroline Ditting. With the takeover of The Commission by Ditting, The Commission will collaborate with The Commission's Instagram account to share book recommendations.
