The Protestant Church in Hesse and Nassau (EKHN) has adopted a double budget for the first time in its history. It has a total volume of almost 1.5 billion euros, as the church announced at its fall synod in Frankfurt on Saturday. The budget for 2024 is around 737 million euros and just under 744 million euros for 2025.

According to the information provided, the budget plan presented expects church tax income to remain almost constant at 540 and 543 million euros respectively over the next two years. This year, church taxes are expected to be around 530 million euros. The rest of the budget will be financed from other income, subsidies and grants, for example from government agencies. To cover the remaining shortfall, the EKHN will probably have to draw 20 million euros from reserves in the 2024/2025 double budget.

The largest items in the budget are personnel expenses amounting to around 330 million euros each year, the church announced. The new budgets include around 340 million euros per year in allocations for work at parish and deanery level. Parishes and deaneries also received adjusted allocations to compensate for additional burdens and an inflation adjustment. The Hesse-Nassau church synod represents around 1.4 million Protestants in an area stretching from Biedenkopf to Mainz and Neckarsteinach.
